The Fall Guy — An adrenaline inducing, romantic comedy painted with jaw-dropping action
The Fall Guy, directed by David Leitch, is based on the original The Fall Guy tv series by Glen A. Larson Productions. This film focuses on Colt Seavers (Ryan Gosling) and his roller coaster career as a profoundly talented stuntman where he is dragged back to the game only to find his ex, Jody Moreno (Emily Blunt) in the director’s chair. Seavers tries to re-spark his lost relationship with Moreno until his acting counterpart, Tom Ryder (Aaron Taylor-Johnson), gets in the way by disappearing. He is employed by Gail Meyer (Hannah Waddingham) to find him. The movie’s director David Leitch takes this film to roaring heights. Leitch himself was a very successful stuntman turned director, allowing him to create the most visually appealing and striking action leaving the viewers speechless. The dramatic flare and realism behind each move is so perfectly orchestrated like beautiful choreography. The chaos and wonderment of the high quality stunts all work flawlessly together creating awe-inspiring madness.
The pace of the entire film is riveting, exploring a constant speed even without the need for physical movement. The production of each scene creates a panicked and frantic atmosphere, infinitely gripping the viewers. It is immediately evident that this film is a thrilling action for all adrenaline junkies but it is also a rom-com. While the romantic element is displayed a little less, there is still a perfect blend between the stunts, wittiness and love. The whole movie is drenched with humor, varying in subtle jokes and dramatic, well-written, comedic scenes. The action brings us up on this high where the audience is stimulated by the thrill and is then brought back down to a calm with the genius humor and peppered romance, allowing them to rise again to an addictive high.
The camera angles and beautiful shots add such an impactful wow-factor. The flawlessly timed explosions in conjunction with the clever set up angles only make the moments more adoring for the audience. The camera as the viewer’s point of view keeps up with the rapid and unpredictable movements of the characters as they race through the streets and speed across the ocean, going further to engage the watchers resulting in full immersion of intensity and excitement. It is these moments of gripping entertainment that makes this film so outstanding and memorable.
The few nods to the original TV series is admirable, not only containing music from the show but a surprise guest appearance is comforting to those who grow up watching the show The Fall Guy. Despite the well-deserved recognition of the original series, the movie The Fall Guy still holds its own as a unique production, folding in modern entertainment with a classic, powerful action film premise.
As a final note, the casting of this movie is nothing but impeccable. Ryan Gosling once again puts on a lovable performance, stealing hearts and catching attention. His comedic timing is a testament to his talent and his acting is always at its peak. To top this, his on and off screen chemistry with Emily Blunt is commendable. Blunt is so naturally funny and witty in this portrayal as Jody Moreno as well as so many of her other amazing roles. She brings this powerful yet calming presence to the screen that compliments the chaos of the plot and cinematography. Aaron Taylor-Johnson does a brilliant job at playing the spoilt entitled movie star while also still making the character likable and hilarious. He understands that the character’s poisoned personality shouldn’t negatively affect the audience’s overall love for the film, really showing off his talent for character portrayal and making the character his own.
I loved every detail of The Fall Guy movie, from the plot to the characters to the look of the whole thing. I was still left thinking about it days after watching. The soundtrack of a movie plays a big part in my enjoyment and this delivered more than I could have asked for. I am a big fan of these actors and this type of film and genre so I had high expectations and they were surpassed. I promote this film with such passion if it is something you think you would be interested in.
